Nutrition and Weight Loss Q and A

How much should I weigh?
Your practitioner at Vitality Health Center does several assessments to determine what a healthy weight is for you. Many providers start with the body mass index (BMI) since it’s a simple calculation based on your height and weight. But since the BMI doesn’t account for someone with a large bone structure or a lot of muscle mass, it’s just a starting point.

Your practitioner also evaluates your health and activity level to help determine a healthy weight for your particular frame. If you do need to lose weight, plan to lose a moderate 1-2 pounds per week. Even though this doesn’t sound like much, if you take your time and start eating the right way — and exercising — you’re more likely to keep the weight off.

Why is nutrition important for weight loss?
Your diet, meaning the foods and drinks you ingest, are full of nutrients (some more than others). Learning to select the right foods that are nutrient-rich helps you eat less overall. When you consume foods that are high in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, you get your body’s essential nourishment without consuming more than necessary.

But all of those numbers and phrases on food labels can be tricky to understand. The expert nutrition team at Vitality Health Center can advise on diet, and what portions are best. Not only will you lose weight healthfully, but you'll also learn to keep it off for life. Plus, your risk of obesity-related diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, goes down as your weight decreases.

Will my weight loss plan include my dietary restrictions?
Yes. Let your nutrition expert know about all of your dietary restrictions and preferences. He or she wants to know if you prefer to follow a vegetarian menu, or if you can’t eat gluten, for instance. You’ll learn all about macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, and fat) and how to balance your food intake to get the right amount of each, by eating the foods you enjoy.

Your customized program also helps you meet your micronutrient (vitamin and mineral) needs, so you start feeling more energized. No matter what type of food restriction you may have, the nutrition specialists at Vitality Health Center can work with you.
